The Evolution of Lindy Hop

Midori and I will be giving a lecture/demonstration to a group of St. John’s University students on November 14, 2005. The lecture plus video and dance demonstration, organized by Professor Jessica Bickley, will trace the lindy hop’s evolution from early jazz dances such as the cakewalk, breakaway, and charleston into its present form.

Dancing with the Luccheses

We recently returned from an incredible research trip to Florida where we spent time and studied with two exceptional dancers who had mentored and inspired our teachers, John and Rose Lucchese. John and Rose Lucchese are living dance history. John started dancing in the 1930s and continues dancing to this day. Over the years, he’s danced everything from Lindy Hop, Peabody, Collegiate Shag, Foxtrot, and Waltz to Mambo, Cha Cha, Pachanga, Argentine Tango, Twist, Hustle. He not only danced them all, but at the most influential venues, including the Savoy Ballroom, Club Fordham, Old and New Roseland, the Palladium and many more. Rose is no slouch herself. She won the Harvest Moon Ball in 1963. The talks and the lessons were unforgettable. We discovered new information about what social jazz dancing was like and new steps handed down by two great dancers.

American Lindy Hop Championships - 2004

At the 2004 American Lindy Hop Championships, we performed a combination of Peabody and ’20s Charleston dancing to Sammy Ulano’s rendition of Bourbon Street Parade, which took first place in the Fast Dance division.

Swingin’ & Hoofin’

What’s the best antidote for the cold–a little bit of rhythm. On Saturday, March 12, 2005, Midori and I host our annual nod to rhythm tap and classic big band jazz. The evening features Felix and All the Cats Big Band, playing classic big band favorites of Fletcher Henderson, Count Basie, Erskine Hawkins, Benny Goodman, and Earl Hines as well as special tribute tunes for the late Artie Shaw.
