Ladies of Jazz Night
92ND STREET Y CELEBRATES
WOMEN'S CONTRIBUTION TO JAZZ MUSIC & DANCE
Saturday, November 13, 2004, 7pm-1am
92nd Street Y on Lexington Avenue at 92nd Street
Admission $15/$10 Students w/valid ID
On Saturday, November 13, the 92nd Street Y will host a swing dance celebrating the contributions of women to jazz music and dance. The evening features the swingin' sound of The Harlem Blues & Jazz Band, a 'national treasure' formed in 1973 by musicians who actually "jumped" at the Woodside and "stomped" at the Savoy that you must remember from one of last year's dances.
The evening begins at 7:00pm with a basic Lindy Hop lesson with emphasis on the ladies. From 8:00pm to 1:00am, there will be dancing to live music performed by ever-popular Harlem Renaissance Orchestra.
During the band's set breaks, we'll celebrate great recorded dance music from jazz's divas with a mix of mellow, medium and fast-tempo tunes, created, performed or inspired by jazz women from the 1930s to the present.
Doors open at 6:45pm on November 13, 2004. Admission is $15 ($10 for students with valid ID) and includes complimentary wine and cheese, light snacks, coffee and tea.
About the 92nd Street Y
Since 1935, the 92ND STREET Y HARKNESS DANCE CENTER has celebrated dance, nurturing the talents of dance greats like Martha Graham, Anna Sokolow, Alvin Ailey, Merce Cunningham, Robert Joffrey and Lester Horton. These artists created, performed and taught at the Y, building the foundation for contemporary dance as we know it. With the generous support of the Harkness Foundation for Dance, the 92nd Street Y Harkness Dance Center continues to nurture the teaching, creation and performance of modern dance, serving adults, children, dance professionals and the community at large.
