On June 12, the 92nd Street Y will celebrate the teaching and dancing career of Paul Grecki with a special tribute dance held in his honor. The evening features the 16-piece Harlem Renaissance Orchestra and special dance performances.
Since 1982, Paul has taught New Yorkers how to swing at Sandra Cameron Dance Center. He studied with two legends of Harlem's Savoy Ballroom -- Al Minns and Frankie Manning -- and helped pave the way in early 1980s for the current swing revival by teaching, performing and hosting dances dedicated to lindy hop.
The evening begins at 8:00pm with a dance lesson covering the basics of swing and of Peabody, a one-step dance of the Teens and Twenties named after a New York police captain and a specialty of Paul. From 9:00pm to 2:00am, there will be dancing to live music performed by ever-popular Harlem Renaissance Orchestra.
At 11:00pm, colleagues and former students of will pay tribute to Paul with special performances in his honor.
Doors open at 7:45pm on June 12, 2004. Admission is $15 ($10 for students with valid ID) and includes complimentary wine and cheese, light snacks, coffee and tea.
